Formula One Archive

From 1975 to 1982 I worked freelance as an accredited cameraman/correspondent for UPITN (United Press International + Independent Television News). I filmed tennis, NASL football, the Indy 500, and the meetings at the United Nations. But the majority of my work was on the Formula One racing circuit and shot on 16mm film. I also filmed F1 for TV Globo Brasil and supplied footage for numerous Formula One films including Speed Fever, Formula Villeneuve and I created my own film "Gasoline" in 1984.

For UPITN I would normally throw the 16mm cans of exposed film into an "onion sack" along with a dope sheet and rush the footage to the airport where it would fly to London for processing and worldwide satellite syndication. While the footage was in the air I would write the script and then read it over the phone to the editor in London. The footage I filmed for UPITN can now be found on the AP Archive.

Inevitably I would have footage from the race weekends that didn't make it into the shipments. This is the footage that makes up my archive, along with quite a few 35mm stills. Recently, footage from my F1 archives has been licensed to Roman and Sofia Coppola's short films for Chanel and the six episode series Prost for Canal+ about former Formula One world champion Alain Prost.
